Is a 4-year-old tyre legal in the UAE?

Yes, if in good condition: the UAE age limit is five years from manufacture. How to check the date, plan for the RTA test and weigh buying older stock.

Short answer

  • Yes. The UAE limit reported by the RTA and ESMA is five years from manufacture, so age alone does not rule out a 4-year-old tyre.
  • It must still pass on condition: 1.6 mm tread for a car, with no heavy wear or cuts.
  • The clock starts at the factory date on the sidewall, not the day you bought or fitted the tyre.
  • Expect about 12 months left. Plan the change before the tyre reaches five years, not at your next test.
  • Think twice before paying a new-tyre price for a tyre that is already four years old.

How old is my tyre?

Find the oval with four digits on the sidewall: week first, then year. Example: 3222.

Example 3222: under five years, with 9 months left

Made
Week 32 of 2022, around 8 August 2022
Age on 23 October 2026
4 years 2 months
Five-year line
Around 8 August 2027

A Dubai car fails the RTA technical test once a tyre is more than five years past its manufacture date. Check all four tyres and the spare.

Yes. A 4-year-old tyre is legal in the UAE as long as it is in good condition, because the limit reported by the RTA and ESMA is five years from the date of manufacture. It has about a year of legal life left, and it still has to meet the tread and damage rules.

The useful question is not only "is it legal today?" but "when does it run out?" This guide shows how to work that out and plan around it.

Two checks apply at the same time. A tyre can be young enough and still be unfit, or look perfect and still be expired.

Check Limit Source
Age Expired once more than 5 years past manufacture RTA statement, Oct 2020
Age, used or unused Tyres reaching 5 years to be disposed of ESMA scheme, reported by Gulf News

For a full account of where the age rule comes from and the claims we could not confirm, see our guide to the 5-year tyre rule. For tread and sidewall checks, see bulges, cracks and tread depth.

We have read the ESMA scheme through press reports, not a published copy of the regulation. Treat the wording here as reported, and check with the RTA or your testing centre if a decision depends on it.

How do I check how old my tyre is?

Find the DOT code on the sidewall. The last four digits are the date: the first two are the week and the last two are the year. Then count five years forward from that point. The code may be on the inner sidewall only, so look behind the wheel with a phone camera if you can't see it. Our guide to reading a tyre date code goes through it step by step, and the age checker on this page does the sum for you.

Worked example: tyres checked in November 2026

Date code Made Age now Reaches 5 years Status
1023 March 2023 About 3 years 8 months March 2028 Fine on age
4522 Early Nov 2022 About 4 years Early Nov 2027 Fine on age; about a year left
1222 March 2022 About 4 years 8 months March 2027 Fine on age; plan the change
4821 Late Nov 2021 Just under 5 years Late Nov 2026 Replace now
3621 Early Sept 2021 About 5 years 2 months Early Sept 2026 Expired

To turn a week into a month, divide by about 4.3. Week 45 falls in early November and week 12 in late March. The exact day doesn't matter much when you are planning months ahead.

Will a 4-year-old tyre pass the RTA test?

On age, yes. The RTA's licensing agency said in October 2020 that a vehicle will not pass the technical test if its tyres are expired, and it described expired as more than five years past manufacture. A tyre at four years is inside that limit. It would fail the same test if it were heavily worn or cut.

The harder part is timing. The test happens once a year, but the tyre's age keeps counting between tests. Police can fine you for driving on expired tyres on any day, so passing the test doesn't protect you until the next one.

Example: registration renewal in February

Say your tyres are coded 4522, made in early November 2022, and your registration renews every February.

Date Tyre age What happens
February 2027 test About 4 years 3 months Passes on age
November 2027 5 years Tyre is now expired
November 2027 to February 2028 Over 5 years You could be fined on the road
February 2028 test About 5 years 3 months Fails on age

So waiting for the test is the wrong trigger here. A sensible date to change these tyres is October 2027, a few weeks before they reach five years.

What happens if the tyre passes five years?

Dubai Police, as reported by Gulf Business on 11 August 2026, put expired tyres under the same offence as worn or damaged ones: a Dh500 fine, four black points and seven days' impoundment. Abu Dhabi Police gave the Dh500 fine and four points in 2022, and the same report said the emirate's traffic law calls for a one-week impoundment.

This is enforced. Dubai Police recorded 826 violations for driving on expired tyres in the first five months of 2026, Gulf News reported. Our tyre fines guide has the detail, including what we could and couldn't confirm under the 2025 traffic law.

Should I replace a 4-year-old tyre anyway?

Not on age alone. Nothing we found says a tyre must go at four years. A mechanic quoted by Gulf News in 2018 advised changing tyres every three years, but that is one person's advice, not a rule.

Other reasons can still make a change sensible:

  • Condition. Replace a tyre with low tread, cracks, cuts or a bulge, whatever its age.
  • Heat. NHTSA, the US road safety regulator, says sunlight and heat speed up rubber breakdown. UAE summers are long and hot, so a four-year-old tyre that lived outdoors deserves a closer look.
  • Uneven sets. If you are replacing one or two tyres, ask a fitter how much difference in wear your car can accept, especially on four-wheel drive.
  • A long trip. If a tyre is near five years, change it before a long drive rather than after it.

Tyre makers set a very different ceiling. Michelin advises a yearly inspection once tyres pass five years, and replacing them 10 years after manufacture, including spares. That is not a UAE allowance. On UAE roads, five years is the figure to plan around.

Is it worth buying a tyre that is already 4 years old?

It is rarely good value unless the discount is very large. You would get about one year of legal use from a tyre that could have given you five.

Here is a simple way to compare. The Dh400 price is only an illustration.

Tyre age when fitted Legal life left Price Cost per legal year
Under 1 year About 4 to 5 years Dh400 About Dh80 to Dh100
2 years About 3 years Dh400 About Dh133
3 years About 2 years Dh400 Dh200
4 years About 1 year Dh400 Dh400

Gulf News reported in 2018 that stock over four years old was still being sold, and it described two drivers whose newly bought tyres failed the RTA test later. Check the code on the sidewall before fitting, not after. Our guide on whether a shop can sell older tyres as new covers what to ask and where to complain.

If you are buying, find your factory size first in our tyre sizes by car pages, then compare dated prices in the tyre prices guide.

Does this apply to a spare or a used car?

Spares. The ESMA scheme, as reported, covered tyres used or unused, so a 4-year-old spare follows the same clock. See do unused spare tyres expire?

Used cars. Read every date code before you buy, including the spare. A car with 4-year-old tyres may need a new set within about a year, so allow for that cost when you negotiate.

Used tyres. Buying a second-hand 4-year-old tyre is a different matter. ESMA said used tyres cannot be resold, even after a day or a month of use. See used and retreaded tyres.

Is it different in Abu Dhabi or Sharjah?

The ESMA scheme was federal, and the five-year figure in the RTA statement is the clearest number we have found. Abu Dhabi Police refer to tyres being valid and not past their expiry date, and the 2022 report does not state the number of years. We found no police or government source for a shorter limit in any emirate, and we will update this page if one appears.

What to check before you act

  • Read the date code on all four tyres and the spare.
  • Write down the month each tyre reaches five years.
  • Compare that month with your next registration test, and plan the change before whichever comes first.
  • Look at the tread and sidewalls now. Age is only one of the checks.
  • Before buying, confirm the production year on the sidewall itself.
  • Rules can change. We checked these sources on 3 November 2026.

Questions people ask

Is a 4-year-old tyre legal in the UAE?

Yes, as long as it is in good condition. The RTA says tyres are expired once they are more than five years past manufacture, so a 4-year-old tyre is within that limit. It still has to meet the tread and damage rules.

Will a 4-year-old tyre pass the RTA test?

On age, yes. The RTA said in 2020 that a car fails the technical test if its tyres are over five years from manufacture, heavily worn or cut. A 4-year-old tyre with good tread and no cuts clears the age check.

How long can I keep using a 4-year-old tyre?

About one more year on the UAE age limit, and less if the tread or sidewalls wear out first. Read the date code on the tyre and count five years from that week and year.

Does the age count from when I bought the tyre?

No. It counts from the date of manufacture, which is the last four digits of the DOT code on the sidewall. Time spent in a warehouse or shop counts too.

Should I replace a 4-year-old tyre now?

Not because of its age alone. Replace it if it has low tread, cracks, cuts or a bulge. Otherwise, plan the change so it happens before the five-year date, and have the tyre checked if you are unsure.
