Do unused spare tyres expire in the UAE?

Yes: UAE tyre rules count age from manufacture, used or unused. What that means for the spare in your boot, the RTA test, space-savers and repair kits.

Short answer

  • Yes. ESMA's 2012 tyre scheme said tyres expire five years after manufacture, whether used or unused.
  • Age runs from the date code on the sidewall, not from when the car or tyre was bought.
  • We found no RTA statement that the annual test checks the spare's age; one retailer says it does.
  • Michelin says spares age on the same timeline as tyres in use and should go by 10 years at most.
  • A space-saver spare is for short, slow trips; Kia and Nissan manuals cap it at 80 km/h.

How old is my tyre?

Find the oval with four digits on the sidewall: week first, then year. Example: 3222.

Example 3222: under five years, with 9 months left

Made
Week 32 of 2022, around 8 August 2022
Age on 23 October 2026
4 years 2 months
Five-year line
Around 8 August 2027

A Dubai car fails the RTA technical test once a tyre is more than five years past its manufacture date. Check all four tyres and the spare.

Yes. In the UAE a tyre's age runs from the day it was made, and the federal tyre scheme ESMA introduced in 2012 said tyres expire five years after manufacture, whether used or unused. A spare that has never touched the road is on the same clock as the four on the car.

What is less clear is enforcement. We found no RTA or police statement that names the spare tyre in the annual test or in roadside checks. The practical answer is the same either way: an old spare is the tyre you will need on the worst day, in the heat, at speed on a highway shoulder.

Do spare tyres expire if never used?

Rubber ages whether the tyre turns or not. Michelin says spares age on the same timeline as regular tyres, used or not, and that heat, sunlight and ozone break rubber down in ways that are not always visible on the surface.

The UAE rule is stricter than most manufacturer advice:

Source What it says about age Applies to spares?
ESMA tyre scheme, 2012 (reported by Gulf News) Tyres expire 5 years after manufacture, used or unused Not named, but "unused" covers them
RTA, October 2020 Cars failed the test for tyres over 5 years from manufacture Spare not mentioned
Michelin (global and Middle East pages) Inspect yearly from 5 years; replace at 10 years from manufacture Yes, says it includes spares
Bridgestone Firestone bulletin, 2005 Inspect at 5 years; replace any tyre made over 10 years ago Yes, includes spares

So the manufacturer ceiling is 10 years, and the UAE limit is five. For a car on UAE roads, plan around five.

How do I check my spare tyre's age?

Find the DOT code on the sidewall and read the last four digits. The first two are the week of manufacture and the last two are the year. Our guide to reading a tyre date code has photos of where to look, and the age checker on this page does the sums.

On many cars the spare sits face down in a well under the boot floor, so the code may be on the hidden side. Lift it out, or check it next time the tyres are changed.

Worked example

Your spare's code ends 1221. That is week 12 of 2021, so late March 2021.

  • Five-year UAE limit: late March 2026. In October 2026, the spare is about seven months past it.
  • Michelin's 10-year ceiling: March 2031.

Under UAE rules that spare is expired, even if the tread looks new. The same logic applies to tyres you bought and stored: see the 5-year rule.

Does the RTA test check the spare tyre?

We could not confirm it. The RTA's October 2020 campaign said vehicles failed for tyres more than five years from manufacture, badly worn tyres and tyres with cuts. It did not mention the spare. We found no Tasjeel or Shamil statement either.

One UAE retailer, PitStopArabia, wrote in April 2026 that unused spares over five years old are not allowed and that inspections check date codes. It did not cite a regulation, so treat that as a retailer's claim.

What police and safety groups do say is check it. In the Gulf News report on the RTA's 2020 campaign, RoadSafetyUAE's checklist told drivers to check the spare regularly so it is fit for use when needed. A Dubai Police summer tyre campaign reported by Gulf News quoted a travel group leader naming the spare among pre-trip checks.

Can an old spare cause a fine?

The UAE fine for driving with expired or worn tyres has been reported as Dh500 and four black points, and Abu Dhabi Police have impounded cars for a week. See UAE tyre fines for the current wording. A spare in the boot is not "driving on" the tyre. Once you fit it after a puncture, it is a tyre on the road like any other.

Full-size spare, space-saver or no spare at all?

Not every car carries the same kind of spare.

Type What it is What the manuals say
Full-size spare Same size as the road tyres, sometimes on a steel wheel Same age and condition checks as the other four
Space-saver (temporary spare) Narrow, lightweight tyre for emergencies Kia and Nissan manuals: no more than 80 km/h; Kia says replace at the first opportunity, Nissan says short periods only
Repair kit instead of a spare Sealant and compressor Nissan Leaf manual: for temporary repair of minor punctures

A full-size spare should match the size on your door label; our tyre sizes by car pages list factory sizes where a carmaker or dealer source exists, such as the Nissan Patrol.

The speed limit for a space-saver is printed on the tyre and in your owner's manual; follow those, not a general rule. The Kia manual also says a compact spare's tread wears faster than a normal tyre's. A space-saver is for getting to a tyre shop, not for the drive home from Hatta.

For pressure, use the figure in your owner's manual or printed on the spare, which is often different from the road tyres. Our guide to tyre pressure in UAE heat explains where to find the door label.

Should I rotate the spare into use?

Only if it is a full-size spare of the same size and type, inside its date, and in good condition. If you rotate a spare in, check it is not older than the tyre it replaces, and that all four tyres still match as your manual requires.

If the spare is close to its five-year date, the cheaper option may be to leave it and replace it with the next set. Ask the fitter to take the old one: see how to dispose of old tyres and where old tyres end up.

Looking after a spare in UAE heat

  • Check its pressure at least monthly, with the other four.
  • Look for cracks, bulges and flat spots when you check.
  • Keep the spare well covered and out of direct sun if it is carried outside the car, such as on the tailgate of some 4x4s.
  • Make sure the jack and wheel brace are in the car and work.

What to check before you act

  • Read the spare's date code; more than five years old means it is expired under UAE rules.
  • Check the spare's pressure, using the manual or the figure printed on it.
  • If it is a space-saver, note the speed limit printed on it.
  • If your car has no spare, know where the repair kit is and when it won't work.
  • When buying tyres, ask whether replacing the spare makes sense at the same time.

Questions people ask

Do spare tyres expire if never used?

Yes. Tyre rubber ages with time and heat whether or not the tyre turns. ESMA's 2012 scheme set the UAE limit at five years from manufacture for tyres used or unused, and Michelin says spares age on the same timeline as tyres in use.

Does the RTA test check the spare tyre?

We found no RTA statement that the technical test checks the spare or its age. The RTA says a car fails if its tyres are over five years old, badly worn or cut. Treat the spare to the same standard so it is safe when you need it.

How do I find the age of my spare tyre?

Read the last four digits of the DOT code on the sidewall. The first two are the week and the last two the year, so 1221 means week 12 of 2021. You may need to lift the spare out to see the side with the code.

Can I use an old spare to get home?

If the spare is cracked, bulging, flat or well past its date, don't rely on it; call roadside assistance instead. A spare in good condition is for getting to a tyre shop, not for keeping on the car.

How fast can I drive on a space-saver spare?

Follow the limit printed on the spare and in your owner's manual. The Kia and Nissan manuals we checked set 80 km/h; Kia says to replace it with a normal tyre at the first opportunity and Nissan says to use it only for short periods.
